Nicolas Cage is regarded as an A list Hollywood actor having received a Golden Globe, Academy Award and Screen Actors Guild Recognition. He was born to a father of Italian descent and a mother of German and British roots on 7th January, 1964. Although his birth name is Nicolas Kim Coppola, he changed the last names for professional purposes. Since Nicolas was an avid fan of a comic book character known as Luke Cage, he changed his surname to ‘Cage’ long before he burst into the limelight. According to him, the reason for the change of name was because he did not want people giving him favors knowing he was the nephew of Francis Ford Coppola, a famous movie director.
At just the age of 15 years, Nicolas Cage was passionate about playing an acting role which prompted him to study theater at Beverly Hills High school. However, Cage was so zealous to start a professional acting career that he dropped out of high school at 17 years. Afterwards, Cage landed his first television gig in 1982 which he played a minor role in the comedy film, ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’. Not satisfied with a minor role, Nicolas Cage became more aggressive in search of a major character portrayal. In doing so, Nicolas Cage unleashed a series of remarkable stunts such as getting his teeth pulled off, swallowing a live cockroach, slashing his arm and destroying a random remote controlled auto-mobile owned by a street trader all in the name of getting a vital role in a movie. The aggression paid off and landed Cage some of his earliest career character portrayal in movies such as Birdy, Racing with the Moon, The Cotton Club and Vampire’s Kiss.
It was only after playing a suicidal alcoholic Hollywood writer in the 1995 movie ‘Leaving Las Vegas’ that Nicolas Cage won an Academy Award. The critically acclaimed movie gained him a wider audience which corresponded with interest from major mainstream Hollywood movies the following year. In 1996, he appeared in ‘The Rock’ while in 1997 he appeared in other high budget Box Office blockbusters such as ‘Face/off’ and ‘Con Air’. Later in 2002, Nicolas Cage received another Academy Award nomination due to his performance in ‘Adaptation’ although he did not win the accolade.
In 2004, Nicolas Cage featured in ‘National Treasure’ Disney movie acting as Benjamin Gates, an enthusiast treasure hunter. The release date of the third installment has not yet been announced, but executive producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Nicolas Cage have publicly acknowledged that plans are underway to release National Treasure 3. The plot of the first movie centers on the Gates Family who are in pursuit of ancient treasure concealed by the founding fathers of America. Together with his father, girlfriend and sidekick, Benjamin Gates embarks on a mission to find the ‘Declaration of Independence’ before it lands on the wrong hands. The second installment, ‘National Treasure; Book of Secrets’ was released in 2007 and it is a continuation of the original film. The second film includes more mystery as it is revealed there is a secret journal passed down for generations from the first president to the current president. Further, new information reveals that Ben’s great grandfather, Thomas Gates, was involved in assassinating Abraham Lincoln. To prove his family’s innocence, Benjamin Gates sets on a mission to kidnap the current president of the United States in order to access the secret journal.
